 The Williams Montessori Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO) needs your help to support our school in 2018-2019.   Please consider taking a role in next year’s leadership team, or stepping up your efforts to participate in some way.

Available PTSO leadership positions for the 2018/2019 School Year:

• President Elect – Serve on the PTSO Executive Board in 2018-19 as support/ back-up to the President; serve as PTSO President in 2019-20. Act as a point of contact to elementary school liaisons.

• *CRITICAL NEED* Treasurer Elect – Serve on the PTSO Executive board in 2018-19 as Assistant Treasurer, helping the Treasurer collect and disburse money, run reports, etc.; serve as PTSO Treasurer in 2019-20

• Fundraising Coordinator – Investigates opportunities for and coordinates PTSO fundraisers outside of Invest in Secondary and Retail Loyalty programs

Outdoor Environment Workday

Wednesday, June 6th from 11:30-3:30 Outdoor Environment chairperson, Greg Anderson will lead students and staff in an outdoor environment workday.  Parents are welcome to help on this workday and should contact Greg Anderson to let him know to expect you.  Tools and materials will be provided.  Students will be completing the work that was begun at the outdoor environment workday this past fall and that work will involve planting hostas, ferns and a number of plants that were provided by Outdoor Images Management (Thank you Stacey Longshore!).  Thank you to Greg for spearheading this event and continuing the effort to beautify our campus.

 

Spring Intersession, 2019

We are so excited to be meeting with all rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders on June 1st to distribute and review a letter with important info pertaining to next year’s Spring Intersession. We will also meet with them in their specific Intersession groups on Wednesday, June 6th. Please review this letter with your child and reach out to the specific Intersession guide with any questions you may have!

 

Spring Dance

The first ever Williams Montessori Spring Dance was a huge success with close to 100 students in attendance. Everyone enjoyed dancing, socializing, snacking and posing for pictures.  Thank you to the Peer Leadership Club for putting on this popular event. We look forward to a Fall Dance!

Service Hours Opportunity

 Sign up to help with carnival games at Chantilly Montessori’s Flutterfest on June 2, 3-6pm.

Help the Agriculture Department and earn volunteer hours.  Please sign up to water the raised garden beds and take care of the chickens over the summer.  Sign up slots are available on a daily basis. Click on the Sign up Genius for details.

Robotics and Technology Club

Robotics and Technology students have had their final meeting/showcase on May 21st. This year has been spent cultivating interest and creating a space for student collaboration and small group, hands-on exploration.

Book Club

The Book Club has officially finished Ready Player One!  We saw the movie last Sunday with a recap meeting at Amelie’s on Tuesday!!   We enjoyed a sharing our thoughts about the differences (and similarities!), likes and dislikes about both!

 We had such a great time JT Williams’ first ever Book Club!  What a great group! We already look forward to what is to come for next year!

Middle School News

The Middle School has successfully completed the second year as ‘Trout in the Classroom’ participants.  Williams Montessori is one of 23 Charlotte area schools that participate in the Rocky River Trout Unlimited Chapter of the nationwide organization, Trout in the Classroom.  The long-term goal of the Trout in the Classroom Program is to educate an increasingly urbanized population of youth about water quality and coldwater conservation and to reconnect them to the systems of streams, rivers and watersheds that sustain them.  Our school is part of this program thanks to Mr. Brian Williams.

 The culmination of the Trout in the Classroom program is the trout release at South Mountain State park.  Students participated in the trout release, learned about macro invertebrates (trout food) and about the mammals that inhabit the South Mountain State Park.  Enjoy the photos taken from our field trip to South Mountain State Park.

 

YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly – 8th Grade Field Trip

8th grade had a blast at their end of year trip to YMCA Blueridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC.

 Students participated in a low ropes course that challenged their leadership and communication skills.

We did a night hike and learned about how our senses adjust to darkness. Also, we learned about animals, and triboluminescence.

Students got to enjoy the high ropes course. Everyone had a great time! They also had some free time, and lots of great food!

Lunch & Learns:

 **If you submitted interest to be a featured professional for Lunch & Learns this year, know that Ms. Bethani will be using that same list to coordinate our Lunch & Learns next year (which will run on a two year rotation to cover each of the 16 different career pathways). If you did not submit your name and information, but would like to speak about your career, please use this link to do so.

The school counseling website is updated monthly with information for parents and students, including a “What’s Up This Month?” page. There is scholarship information, college planning information, mindfulness, and a career page, which features a different career every month. We post helpful videos, once a quarter, which relate to careers. This is also one option for requesting an appointment with a counselor. Check it out!

Theater Department News

Ms Myneesha and Ms Monica are having the theater students complete a Green Screen project and are in need of a few donations to complete the project.

Ultimate Frisbee Team

The Ultimate Frisbee season has come to an end and we are so proud of our players who kept their cool while playing many highly competitive teams.  We are excited to grow this team next year. Ultimate Frisbee will continue to be held in the Spring and you can look for registration information in February.

 A big shout out to Tom Parks for donating his time and talents to this team this year along with assistant coach, Eddie Martinez.  Thanks to all the dedicated parents who worked together to carpool kids to all the games.

Girls Soccer   Girls Soccer is coming to JT Williams! Depending on the level of interest and the number of players registered, we may end up with both a middle school and a high school team. Sports Planning for 2018-2019 school year

We are beginning to plan some opportunities for sports at our school next year.  No, we are not getting CMS organized sports, but we are putting together a variety of sports that can be played on campus, after school, and will include opportunities for all students.  Dara Whittle, PTSO Sports Coordinator, along with Coach Franz, our Williams Physical Education and Health teacher, will be working with students and families to organize club sports for our Williams students.   So far we are planning for Middle School girls and boys soccer , Middle School girls field hockey, MS/HS co-ed golf, MS/HS co-ed volleyball, MS/HS Co-ed Ultimate Frisbee, MS/HS Co-ed Mountain Biking. There will be a combination of teams organized through local leagues and sports “clinics” set up on campus throughout the year.  If you have a student that is interested in starting a new sport, they should communicate to Coach Franz,  who will help them seek out other students interested in playing that sport.  If you are a parent who is interested in coaching or have a connection to someone interested in coaching, or would like to lead a sport planned for next year, or would like to propose leading a different sport, please contact Dara Whittle at or call/text me at 704-930-8107.  It will take dedicated parents willing to help drive an alternative sports program at our school to make sports at Williams a success.  I strongly encourage parents who have kids who are passionate about a sport or parents who are well connected in the Charlotte sports scene to step up and help us get this program going at Williams.  We have an amazing campus so let’s use it to help keep our kids physically fit and help build community through playing sports together.

Peer Leaders Club

Peer Leaders is a club that is designed to enliven the spirit of our school. This group will plan events such as spirit week, mix-it-up lunches, random acts of kindness, school dances, and more!

 Peer Leaders generally meet every other Friday at 8am, but have also been participating in working lunches.

Yoga Club

Yoga Club is designed to support students with individual growth and empowerment through the practice of yoga. Students will learn how to apply principles learned on the mat in their daily lives!

 Yoga Club has been lucky enough to get a HUGE discount at Yoga One ($5/class!). We have been enjoying Power Flow as well as Power Beats classes (music)! Please see below for meeting dates for the remainder of the year:

•  Wednesday, June 6th from 5:30-6:30 (I can drive up to 6 students from Williams to Yoga One Central)

Mountain Bike Club

The Williams Montessori MTB team finished the season with a rained out race last weekend.  Unfortunately, due to the end of the school year, the race could not be rescheduled.

 It was a fun season for all. Thanks go to all the student-athletes who rode with us and participated in the races as well as the parents who supported their children.  We are looking forward to next year.

Anyone who is interested in participating should look for notes in the newsletter next fall.  We will start riding in October 2018. Please contact Mark Dombroski if you are interested in participating next year.  See you on the trails this summer!

Bike Commute – Two Wheel Tuesday

The next Bike Commute will be on Tuesday, June 5th and this will also be our last commute of the school year.

 Two Wheel Tuesday has partnered with Clean Air Carolina for our last ride and we will get to act as citizen scientists and measure the particulate pollution along our route in the morning and the afternoon using CAC’s Airbeam Monitors.  Look for our results in an upcoming newsletter!

Bring – bike – helmet – water – bike lock – backpack/pannier

Meet in Freedom Park by the train playground for a 7:30 am departure.

1st stop – Elizabeth Ave. and the greenway (CPCC) – arrive 7:45 – Parking is available.

 2nd stop – 9th and the Rail Trail (The Charlotte Lab School) – arrive 8:00 – Parking is available.

 3rd stop – VBGB’s – 8:20 – parking available.

Return in the afternoon, aiming to leave WM by 4:20 and back to Freedom Park by 5:15.

This 7 mile route takes us approximately 60 minutes to complete including stops.

Proctors Needed

Our end of year testing begins tomorrow and will continue through June 1st.  In order to have a successful testing season, we are in need of proctors. Volunteers proctors spend about 4 hours in the classrooms monitoring test sessions.  If we do not have proctors, our tests will get pushed back which could interfere with end of year activities that have already been scheduled. Spring Picnic

Thank you to all that came out for our annual Spring Picnic.  With the threat of thunderstorms and rain we got awfully lucky to have such a pleasant afternoon for our picnic.  Many enjoyed our continually evolving quad area as students have added benches, picnic tables and cozy seating areas.  As you can see from our photos below it was a fun and happy time for our school community.

The Book Club has officially finished A Wrinkle In Time!  We read the book and just before Spring Break, were able to squeeze in a viewing of the movie…so interesting!!   We enjoyed a sharing our thoughts about the differences (and similarities!), likes and dislikes about both!

 The club voted and Ready Player One won out for the next selection.  We’re looking forward to more lively discussions!

Mello, the guinea pig needs a place to stay over summer vacation.  Families are welcome to tag team housing Mello by taking him for a week or two and passing him along to the next family.  Contact Ms Patti if you are willing to take a week.

Counselor News

May Lunch & Learns:

 On Wednesday, May 30th, an admissions counselor from Davidson College will be joining us during lunches. Davidson College is a small, local college that is ranked among the top 30 colleges in our country. They will be hosting a small group discussion for interested students. Students should see Ms. Bethani to sign up.

Soccer Club

Soccer season has come to an end.  What a great season we had thanks to our volunteer coaches Jake Whittle and Fritz Birkmaier and all the parent support we got from Jolanda Hengstman as our team communications person (so helpful to get the routine communication!!!) along with all the parents who got their kids to games and practices and  donated snacks every week. Remember that next year Boys Soccer is happening in the Fall (look for registration information at the start of school). We welcome a new soccer coach, Aaron George, to the team. Aaron is an incoming parent at Williams and has multiple years of coaching soccer at the elementary and high school level. I am sure that Jake and Fritz won’t be far away as both their boys will be playing on the team.  It won’t be long before we will need two coaches to lead a Middle School and High School team so the more the better.

 

Ultimate Frisbee Team

Field Hockey is coming to JT Williams!  

Hannah Campos and Archer Herndon are starting a field hockey team at Williams and we want you to play!  Field hockey is a super fun sport where you use a wood stick (smaller face than ice hockey) and hit the ball around the field and into the goal to score.  The principles of the game are similar to soccer–lots of dribbling, passing, shooting, and ball tricks. We will start practicing 2-3 times each week in August and have about 8 games with area middle schools.  The cost per player is $365. It’s okay if you don’t have experience–we will teach you or you can attend a clinic this summer. In order to get this team started, we need to know your interest! Please email us at Hannah Campos’s mom BY MAY 25th to let us know that you want to play.  We will play with the Charlotte Ambush league:  GENERAL INFORMATION  Once we hear back from you, we can get our school on the list.

Bike Commute – Two Wheel Tuesday

There will not be a bike commute on Tuesday, May 29 due to EOG testing at Park Road Montessori (several of our ride leaders work at PRM).  The next commute will be on Tuesday, June 5th and this will also be our last commute of the school year.

 Two Wheel Tuesday has partnered with Clean Air Carolina for our last ride and we will get to act as citizen scientists and measure the particulate pollution along our route in the morning and the afternoon using CAC’s Airbeam Monitors.  Look for our results in an upcoming newsletter!

Bring – bike – helmet – water – bike lock – backpack/pannier

Meet in Freedom Park by the train playground for a 7:30 am departure.

1st stop – Elizabeth Ave. and the greenway (CPCC) – arrive 7:45 – Parking is available.

 2nd stop – 9th and the Rail Trail (The Charlotte Lab School) – arrive 8:00 – Parking is available.

 3rd stop – VBGB’s – 8:20 – parking available.

Return in the afternoon, aiming to leave WM by 4:20 and back to Freedom Park by 5:15.

This 7 mile route takes us approximately 60 minutes to complete including stops.

Continue to save your boxtops for our collection next year.  This School year we have received $118.70 from Box Top Rewards. They add up fast. Tell your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to save them for you.

 

Harris Teeter

Link your Harris Teeter VIC card (if you shop at Harris Teeter) to  JT Williams Secondary Montessori. We are #1430.  Up to 5 schools can be linked to your VIC card. Harris Teeter requires that you sign up each school year.  If you haven’t signed up for the 2017/2018 school year, please sign up as soon as you can. Williams Montessori has received $136.00 in rewards from Harris Teeter but can’t receive this money until we reach $250!  Help us reach $250, sign up today (you can sign up online!).

Soccer season has come to an end.  What a great season we had thanks to our volunteer coaches Jake Whittle and Fritz Birkmaier and all the parent support we got from Jolanda Hengstman as our team communications person (so helpful to get the routine communication!!!) along with all the parents who got their kids to games and practices and  donated snacks every week. Remember that next year Boys Soccer is happening in the Fall (look for registration information at the start of school). We welcome a new soccer coach, Aaron George, to the team. Aaron is an incoming parent at Williams and has multiple years of coaching soccer at the elementary and high school level. I am sure that Jake and Fritz won’t be far away as both their boys will be playing on the team.  It won’t be long before we will need two coaches to lead a Middle School and High School team so the more the better.
